Hair care basics
How to choose shampoo and conditioner for your hair type
The best shampoo depends on both your scalp and the length and texture of your hair.
Start with the scalp
An oily scalp may need washing more often with a clarifying or balancing shampoo. A dry or sensitive scalp often does better with a gentle, fragrance-free formula.
Then the lengths
- Fine or straight hair: lightweight conditioners, applied mid-length to ends.
- Wavy hair: light moisture plus a leave-in to define waves.
- Curly and coily hair: richer conditioners, co-washes and leave-in products; many people wash less often.
Color-treated hair
Look for shampoos labeled color-safe and rinse with cooler water.
Read the label
Sulfates clean strongly and lather well. Silicones add slip and shine but can build up; a clarifying wash now and then helps.
Test for a few weeks
Hair often needs a few washes to adjust to a new routine.
